At the Kalvarija Border Guard Station of the Varėna Border Guard Unit under the State Border Guard Service of the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania, construction is proceeding rapidly on special-purpose buildings, a helicopter landing pad with a security zone, and other infrastructure necessary for the work of border guards.
Colonel Lieutenant Rolandas Griškonis, commander of the Kalvarija Border Guard Station, emphasizes that this infrastructure will ensure modern working conditions for officers, opportunities to better prepare for service, and the ability to repair vehicles.
“This infrastructure will be used by both Lithuanian and Polish officers during joint patrols. Conditions for conducting joint patrol briefings and officer training will improve significantly. “This project is undoubtedly important not only for our border guard station but also for the entire border service in improving officers’ preparedness, ensuring effective border protection, and enabling a rapid response to incidents,” says R. Griškonis.
Upon completion of construction work, the Kalvarija Border Guard Station will feature:
- an 800 m² special-purpose building;
- a helicopter landing pad with a security zone;
- a 50-space impound lot for seized vehicles;
- outdoor exercise equipment and a multi-purpose sports field;
- garages and other auxiliary infrastructure.
The project is expected to be completed ahead of schedule – as early as this summer.
According to Danielius Pečiulis, CEO of the contractor UAB Statybos ritmas, this was achieved thanks to effective cooperation between the client and the contractor, constructive and prompt problem-solving, and joint efforts to execute the project smoothly and to a high standard, recognizing that this is a project of national importance.
“This building is the very first structure that everyone crossing the Polish-Lithuanian border sees. The main transit traffic passes through this point. Therefore, it is extremely important that everyone arriving here is greeted by modern infrastructure designed for the work of officials, meeting contemporary standards of sustainability and functionality,” notes D. Pečiulis.
The project no LTPL00353“Joint Actions of Lithuanian and Polish Border Guard Services to Contribute to a Safer and More Secure Europe” (“Border Guards”) launched on December 1, 2024. It is implemented by the State Border Guard Service under the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania and the Podlaski Border Guard Regional Unit of Maj. Gen. Henryk Minkiewicz.
