Project summary:
The project aims to develop sustainable cooperation between cultural institutions in the border regions of Poland and Lithuania, specifically Rudamina Cultural Center and Communal Culture and Recreation Center in Wilkasy, to enhance public awareness and knowledge of cross-border cultural heritage in dance and music, exchange experience and skills, and strengthen cultural institutions while improving the accessibility and quality of their services. Focusing on the shared traditions of the Vilnius and Masuria regions, the project represents an innovative effort to revive the lost cultural identity of the area, not through indigenous populations, but through descendants of those resettled after World War II. Following the post-war population displacements, many inhabitants of the Vilnius region settled in Masuria, including Giżycko, bringing with them local traditions such as the Vilnius band featuring the dulcimer, with cymbalists performing both in ensembles and solo. The project seeks to recreate the folklore, music, and cultural practices of these regions that were diminished or forgotten due to historical changes, preserving this heritage and fostering cultural exchange between communities with shared historical roots.
