Priority:

Specific objective:
4.1 - Developing and enhancing sustainable, climate resilient, intelligent and intermodal national, regional and local mobility, including improved access to TEN-T and cross-border mobility
Date:
From: 2024.12.01 Till: 2027.11.30
Project summary:
The project aims to promote good neighbourly relations and balanced socio-economic development in the Lithuanian–Polish border regions, focusing on Sejny District (Poland) and Lazdijai District Municipality (Lithuania). Both areas share similar challenges, including peripheral location, sparse population, low economic activity, and weak cross-border connections, which hinder their accessibility and integration. The project’s overall objective is to improve connectivity between frontier communities through enhanced transboundary road infrastructure, experience exchange, and the development of cross-border mobility between Lazdijai and Sejny districts. Its specific objective focuses on developing transport infrastructure that serves cross-border mobility. The initiative introduces an innovative approach that combines the rehabilitation of a 22.26 km integrated cross-border transport corridor with knowledge exchange among Lithuanian and Polish stakeholders and the promotion of mobility as a key driver of cooperation. The investment connects Polish national road No. 16 in Giby with Lithuanian national road No. 2505 in Kauknoris, crossing the border at the former Berżniki–Kapčiamiestis checkpoint. With 11.6 km of works on the Polish side and 11.33 km on the Lithuanian side, the upgraded corridor will enhance accessibility, safety, and convenience for residents, tourists, and service providers alike. By improving transport infrastructure and promoting mobility solutions, the project will make the borderland more competitive and attractive while fostering economic growth, social cohesion, and environmental sustainability. Close cooperation between the Lithuanian and Polish partners is essential to achieving these results, ensuring long-term impact, maintenance, and continued cross-border collaboration. Ultimately, the project will strengthen territorial governance, enhance spatial coherence, and improve the quality of life for local residents through better connectivity, increased investment potential, and a stronger sense of shared European integration.
