Project summary:
The project addresses the degradation of agriculturally used peatlands in the Lithuanian-Polish border region, which causes greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity loss, water pollution, and landscape deterioration. Its overall objective is to promote peatland restoration by building the capacities of institutions and increasing awareness among farmers and landowners. Key activities include: development of a practical handbook, training sessions, field days demonstrating peatland rewetting, public awareness events, and studies on restoration targets and biomass use. NGOs will cooperate with local authorities and agricultural advisors, who will act as multipliers to ensure adoption of restoration practices. A cross-border approach allows sharing of expertise and best practices, demonstrating practical restoration through pilot rewetting of two peatlands.
