Project summary:
In recent years, healthcare systems in Poland and Lithuania have faced unprecedented challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed gaps in emergency preparedness, while the 2022 conflict in Ukraine highlighted the vulnerability of hospitals to crisis situations, including armed conflicts. Decades of peace had left border-region hospitals underprepared for such scenarios. The project aims to strengthen the resilience of emergency care in the Polish-Lithuanian border region by: Providing medical personnel with practical and theoretical training in crisis and battlefield medicine. Equipping hospitals with modern medical devices and technical facilities. Developing standardized algorithms for hospital operations, including cross-border patient transfers. Direct beneficiaries are the Voivodeship Hospital in Suwałki and Alytus District Hospital, which will gain improved emergency care capacity, better-trained staff, and operational protocols for extreme situations. Indirect beneficiaries include the populations of Suwałki and Alytus, who will benefit from safer, more prepared healthcare services. The project addresses a cross-border problem: crises often extend beyond administrative borders, making coordinated responses essential. The creation of emergency response algorithms and operational procedures will serve as a replicable tool for other hospitals in the region. Knowledge and skills gained will also enhance day-to-day hospital operations.
