Project summary:
The project addresses shared challenges in Poland and Lithuania, particularly in rural border areas, such as negative demographic trends, limited access to healthcare facilities, low service quality, outdated equipment, and poor public awareness of preventive health care. These issues are especially acute among the elderly. To tackle them, the project supports improved cross-border healthcare provision by enhancing infrastructure, strengthening collaboration between health institutions, and involving local authorities. The overall objective is to support healthcare systems in Białystok County and Švenčionys Municipality by building collaborative capacity, upgrading medical equipment, and enhancing local health governance. Key activities include purchasing an AI-supported system for the endoscopy lab in Białystok and an ultrasound apparatus in Švenčionys, both improving diagnostic speed, treatment quality, and patient safety. The project also adopts the WHO’s “Health in All Policies” approach to improve accountability for health outcomes in policymaking. A key innovation is the creation of a Cross-border Health Observatory—an information hub and network that promotes cooperation, shares data and good practices, and maps cross-border healthcare operators. This will be supported by joint workshops to build a sustainable healthcare cooperation ecosystem. As a result, residents of the border region will gain better access to specialist services, shorter waiting times, and higher quality care, while hospitals and local governments will strengthen their ability to deliver efficient and effective healthcare.
