Project summary:
Poland and Lithuania, despite an initially strong response to COVID-19, became two of the most affected countries in Europe by late 2020. The pandemic exposed long-standing weaknesses: underfunded healthcare systems, shortages of specialists, long waiting times for examinations and surgeries, outdated equipment, and mortality rates from preventable diseases that exceed the EU average. Many patients, influenced by misinformation, sought help too late and arrived at hospitals in critical condition, further increasing the burden on medical staff. The project aims to improve healthcare quality and accessibility in the LT–PL border region by strengthening diagnostics, treatment capacity, and infrastructure. Key actions include reducing waiting times for surgical and endoscopic procedures—especially through minimally invasive surgery—improving operating theatre ventilation to reduce infections, and upgrading diagnostic, treatment, and patient-transport equipment. The project also supports better recognition of post-COVID-19 complications and increases awareness of patient rights under Directive 2011/24/EU. Joint activities such as experience exchange, professional trainings, health promotion, and cross-border cooperation will enhance the capacity of healthcare institutions in Ełk County (PL) and Druskininkai County (LT). As a result, medical staff will benefit from new skills and modern tools, while residents will gain access to safer, higher-quality healthcare services.
