Project summary:
The project aims to preserve and revitalize the ancient forest tree beekeeping tradition as intangible cultural heritage while promoting sustainable tourism in the Yotvingian Land along the Lithuanian-Polish border. This craft, with over 1,000 years of history, once played a key role in the social and economic life of the region. Over time, it nearly disappeared, surviving only through the efforts of a few enthusiasts in Dzūkija (LT) and Augustów (PL). Tree beekeeping has been officially recognized as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Poland (2016) and Lithuania (2019). The main promoters of this tradition are Bractwo Bartne in Poland and the Administration of Dzūkija National Park and Cepkeliai Strict Nature Reserve in Lithuania, who are joining forces to safeguard and develop this living heritage. With the support of ERDF funding, the project will expand the Museum of Tree Beekeeping Culture in Augustów, establish a Beekeeper’s Homestead in Musteika village, and enhance knowledge and skills among tree beekeepers, local communities, and target audiences. The project will organize educational activities, workshops, and promotional events to increase awareness of the tradition among visitors, culture enthusiasts, and nature lovers. By developing a cross-border tourism route, improving tourism services, and showcasing the unique heritage of Yotvingian Land, the project is expected to increase the region’s visibility nationally and internationally. It will also foster community engagement, strengthen local capacities, and create new opportunities for sustainable economic and cultural development.
