Project summary:
Waste is a major environmental, social, and economic challenge in Europe, with over 3 billion tonnes generated annually, 90% of which is discarded after first use. Despite EU directives and circular economy targets, total waste generation increased by 5% between 2010 and 2018. Cities in the Lithuanian-Polish border region, including Alytus (583.7 kg per inhabitant in 2020) and Suwałki (256 kg per inhabitant in 2021), face common challenges in waste reduction, sorting, and promoting responsible consumption. The project aims to increase public environmental awareness and develop practical waste prevention solutions, particularly targeting children and youth. Activities include cross-border experience exchange, development of urban waste reduction strategies, educational programs in 30 kindergartens and 12 schools, and joint initiatives to reduce and recycle food and other waste. By building skills and raising awareness from an early age, the project seeks to instill green-minded thinking and foster sustainable behavior in the border communities.
