Project summary:
Public healthcare in the Lithuanian–Polish border area faces common challenges—underfunding, limited access, and low service quality. These issues lead to poorer health outcomes, as recognized in both countries’ national development strategies. Chronic diseases, such as cancer, remain a major concern, especially in regions like Prienai. Cross-border health risks, highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic, further emphasize the need for joint action.
This project aims to improve public health in Kętrzyn (Poland) and Prienai (Lithuania) through prevention, education, and better access to healthcare services. Key activities include:
• Health campaigns (e.g., World Day Against Cancer events in both municipalities)
• Free medical examinations for 900 residents of Kętrzyn by six specialist doctors
• Cancer marker tests for 300 people in Prienai
• Creation of a Rural Medical Centre in Parcz village, Kętrzyn Municipality
• School workshops on healthy living and an international youth event with health experts
• An international conference in Prienai on regional and local health policy.
The project targets both adults and youth, with special attention to those recovering from COVID-19. It is jointly implemented and financed by both municipalities, based on a partnership established during meetings in early 2024. A formal cooperation agreement will be signed during the project.
Objectives:
• Promote health education and disease prevention
• Increase early diagnosis through specialist exams and cancer testing
• Establish local medical infrastructure in rural areas.
By working together, the municipalities aim to raise health standards and awareness on both sides of the border—creating lasting benefits for communities in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship and Kaunas Region.
