Project number:
LTPL00050
Project status:
Ongoing
Call:

Priority:
1. Promoting environmental wellbeing and strengthening crisis management
Specific objective:
1.1 - Enhancing protection and preservation of nature, biodiversity and green infrastructure, including in urban areas, and reducing all forms of pollution
Date:
From: 2024.02.01 Till: 2026.01.31
Project summary:
Suwałki and Alytus face limited green public spaces, low biodiversity, and deteriorating urban greenery, which contribute to heat islands, pollution, and reduced quality of life. The project aims to strengthen the protection of natural resources and develop green infrastructure by creating new parks: the Garden of the Senses in Suwałki, designed to provide therapeutic and educational experiences, and Jasmine Park in Alytus, which will foster community connections, preserve natural ponds, and support habitats for insects and small fauna. The project also promotes nature protection and climate resilience through solutions that increase rainwater absorption, reduce flooding, and limit noise pollution. Mature trees will be planted, native species protected, and invasive species removed, while ecological corridors and shelters for insects and bees will be installed, with children participating in workshops to learn about biodiversity and pro-environmental behavior. Cross-border cooperation between municipal staff in Suwałki and Alytus will facilitate experience exchange and best practices in urban ecology, climate adaptation, and green area management, ensuring a sustainable and educational impact for both communities.
