Project summary:
The project, initiated by the Lithuanian and Polish Border Guard Services, focuses on strengthening cooperation and institutional capacity to enhance public security in the Lithuanian–Polish border region. Both partners are responsible for maintaining safety and order during peacetime through crime prevention and management, investigation and intelligence operations, rescue activities, and other public security measures. However, evolving geopolitical challenges—such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing war in Ukraine—have created new demands for closer collaboration and improved preparedness. Despite sharing similar responsibilities and goals, the Lithuanian and Polish Border Guard Services operate under different national legislations, which can hinder seamless cooperation. Recognizing these differences, the partners seek to harmonize practices and build stronger operational ties to ensure that regional disparities in socio-economic development do not compromise the quality or extent of public security. The overall goal of the 36-month project is to strengthen the institutional abilities of both Border Guard Services in order to reduce transnational crime in the cross-border region. The project consists of two work packages: the first focuses on cooperation for strengthening joint actions, aiming to enhance the capabilities and collaboration of the services in ensuring regional safety; the second focuses on developing modern facilities and supplying specialized equipment necessary for effective joint operations. The main beneficiaries include the Lithuanian and Polish Border Guard Services, national and regional authorities, the general public, and the media. Implemented by the State Border Guard Service under the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania and the Podlaski Border Guard Regional Unit of Maj. Gen. Henryk Minkiewicz, the project embodies a true cross-border partnership. By sharing knowledge, capacities, and infrastructure, the partners will ensure the long-term continuity of cooperation—both during the project and beyond its completion—thereby contributing to a safer, more secure, and better-integrated border region.
