Project summary:
The project addresses the shared challenges of resocialization and social reintegration of former and current prisoners in the Lithuanian–Polish cross-border region, where cooperation between institutions and community involvement remain limited. Despite existing legal frameworks and national efforts in both countries, reintegration processes are still fragmented, marked by weak inter-institutional cooperation, low employment opportunities for inmates, and persistent social stigma. The main objective of the project is to strengthen trust and improve the effectiveness of resocialization by building a structured cross-border network of institutions, practitioners, and local communities involved in all stages of the process. This includes penitentiary services, municipalities, NGOs, and community actors working together to exchange knowledge, share best practices, and develop more coordinated approaches. The project also promotes community engagement and public awareness, highlighting the importance of successful reintegration for social cohesion and reducing stigma. Special attention is given to involving families and local communities in cross-border initiatives, strengthening social ties and mutual understanding in the regions of Kaunas, Marijampolė, Alytus, and the Olsztyn subregion. By introducing a systematic, cross-border approach and collecting empirical data through surveys and activities, the project aims to support long-term improvements in resocialization policies and provide evidence-based recommendations for future cooperation and governance models in both countries.
