Date:
From: 2024.03.01 Till: 2026.02.28
Project summary:
The project builds on existing cooperation between Alytus Polyclinic (Lithuania) and Pro-Medica (Poland) to address shared cross-border healthcare challenges. Both countries face underfunded health systems (Lithuania 5.5% of GDP, Poland 4.8%), limited access to specialists, long waiting times, and higher-than-average mortality from preventable or treatable causes. COVID-19 further strained the system, highlighting gaps in emergency and preventive care. The project aims to improve healthcare quality and accessibility. In Alytus, focus is on reducing wait times for pulmonology services, including tuberculosis prevention and COVID-19 complications. In Ełk, emphasis is on faster delivery of surgical procedures, particularly minimally invasive surgery, improving patient recovery, reducing pain and infection risk, and minimizing scarring. Upgrading operating room ventilation and acquiring modern diagnostic and surgical equipment will further enhance safety and quality of care. Cross-border collaboration includes knowledge exchange, trainings, workshops, and conferences to strengthen healthcare provider capacities and preventive programs. Long-term goals include better cross-border cooperation, more efficient healthcare delivery, and increased patient awareness of cross-border rights under EU Directive 2011/24/EU. The project addresses: Long waiting times and limited access to services Insufficient preventive programs for infectious diseases Outdated medical equipment and infrastructure Poor ventilation in operating rooms Solutions include joint experience sharing, staff training, modern equipment acquisition, and infrastructure improvements. Beneficiaries include residents of Ełk and Alytus districts and healthcare personnel involved in service delivery.
