Project summary:
Urban areas in Alytus (Lithuania) and Suwałki (Poland) face significant water pollution, with wastewater discharged into the Nemunas and Czarna Hańcza rivers, affecting local ecosystems and the Baltic Sea. Many private households are not connected to sewage systems, with 31% of wastewater discharged untreated.
The project aims to reduce pollution, improve wastewater management, and establish effective monitoring, especially for hazardous substances. Measures include installing automatic treatment devices in private homes, raising awareness through seminars, and promoting wastewater transport to treatment plants. Annual reductions are expected in BOD (14.4 t), suspended solids (9.6 t), nitrogen (1.46 t), and phosphorus (0.2 t).
Treatment plants in both cities use anaerobic digestion to produce biogas and compost sludge for agriculture, supporting the circular economy. A SCADA system will enhance monitoring and efficiency, reducing pollutant discharge and energy use. The project also provides methodology and equipment for pollutant monitoring.
Implemented by JSC “Dzūkijos vandenys” and Suwałki Water Supply and Sewerage Company, the initiative benefits residents, strengthens professional capacity, and engages local authorities and environmental institutions in cross-border cooperation for cleaner water and sustainable wastewater management.
